When in Doubt, Seek Care

This guide provides general information about severity levels. If you're uncertain about your dog's condition, always err on the side of caution and contact your veterinarian. You know your dog best—trust your instincts if something seems wrong.

Mild Symptoms

Schedule routine veterinary appointment

Characteristics:

  • Occasional scratching that doesn't interfere with daily activities
  • Slight redness in localized areas
  • Mild dry or flaky skin
  • Dog remains comfortable, eating, and sleeping normally

Recommended Action:

Schedule a routine veterinary appointment within 1-2 weeks. Document symptoms with photos and notes to share with your vet.

Moderate Symptoms

Seek veterinary care within 2-3 days

  • Moderate redness or inflammation across multiple areas
  • Visible pustules, crusting, or scabs
  • Hair loss in affected areas
  • Persistent paw licking causing discoloration
  • Noticeable odor from skin or ears

Recommended Action:

Contact your veterinarian within 2-3 days. Condition may worsen without treatment and cause significant discomfort.

Severe Symptoms

Seek veterinary care within 24 hours

Characteristics:

  • Constant scratching causing self-trauma and bleeding
  • Deep red or purple discoloration
  • Oozing or weeping lesions
  • Painful areas that dog guards or reacts to touch
  • Rapidly spreading lesions
  • Significant hair loss across large areas
  • Behavioral changes due to discomfort

Recommended Action:

Contact your veterinarian immediately for same-day or next-day appointment. Severe symptoms cause significant suffering and can lead to complications.

Emergency Symptoms

Seek immediate emergency veterinary care

Characteristics:

  • Facial swelling - especially around eyes, lips, or muzzle
  • Breathing difficulties - labored, noisy, or rapid breathing

Additional Considerations

Rapid Changes

Any condition that worsens rapidly (within hours) should be evaluated sooner than the timeframe suggested for its current severity level.

Quality of Life

If symptoms significantly impact your dog's ability to eat, sleep, or engage in normal activities, seek care promptly regardless of severity classification.

Puppies and Seniors

Very young puppies and senior dogs may need earlier intervention as they can deteriorate more quickly than healthy adults.

Multiple Symptoms

Dogs presenting with multiple symptoms simultaneously should be evaluated sooner than those with a single symptom.
